UNIT-I
Theories of chemical bonding: VBT-Interpretation of potential energy curve for covalent bonding, extension of VBT-resonance and hybridization concepts (sp, sp2, sp3, dsp2, dsp3,Ionic bond: Polarisation of ions, Fajan’s rules for transition of ionic bond to covalent bond.
UNIT-II
MOT: LCAO method, bonding antibonding and nonbonding MOs, MO energy diagram and ectronic configurations of some simple homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic molecules e H.. He2, N2, 0,, CO and NO, bond order, Interpretation of bond length, bond energy and rnagnetic properties.
UNIT-III
Weak Interactions: Hydrogen bonding, van der Waal’s forces.Crystal structure: Crystal lattice, unit cell, rules for calculating the number of atoms in a unit cell of metals, revision of closed packed structures and its relevance in the study of ionic solids like NaCI and CsCI.
UNIT-IV
Quantitative inorganic analysis: Use of KMnO4, K2Cr207 for estimation of Fe2/Fe3, use of Na2S2O3 for estimation of Cu2-theory and numerical problems.

UNIT-I
Introduction to organic synthesis: Formation of carbon-carbon bond, electrophilic and nucleophilic carbon species, base catalysed condensations, Wittig reaction, Mannich reaction and Merwein-Pondorf-VerlY reduction, Michael reaction.
UNIT-II
Heterocyclic compounds: Five members heterocycles, aromatic character and synthesis of pyrrole, furan and thiophene. Electrophjlic substitution in pyrrole, furan and thiophene. chemical reactivity and orientation.
UNIT-III
Six-membered and Condensed five- and six-membered heterocycles: Structure, synthesis. reactions and basicity of pyridine. Synthesis of indole, quinoline isoquinoline. Fisher Indole synthesis, Skraup quinoline synthesis and Bischler Napieralskj synthesis.
UNIT-IV
Basic concepts and applications of spectroscopy to organic chemistry: UV-Visible:Review of basic principles, Woodwards rules. Application of UV to conjugated polyenes.
Infrared.: Review of basic principles, characterization of carbonyl, hydroxyl and amine groupsby IR.

UNIT-I
Electrochemistry I: Variation of equivalent conductance with electrolytic concentration, Debye-Huckel theory of strong electrolytequaljtatjve treatment, Kohiarauseb’s law of independent migration of ions and its application Transport number and their determination by Hittorff’s method and moving boundary method.
UNIT-II
Electrochemistry II: Galvanic cell, Reversible and irreversible cells, cell e.m.f. and its determination. Reference electrodes, Hydrogen and Calomel electrode, Nernst equation and its application, p11 and its determination by e.m.f. method, buffer solution and Henderson equation.
UNIT-III
Photochemistry I: Difference between thermal and photochemical processes, laws of photochemistry, Grothus-Drapper law, Stark-Einstein Law. Quantum yield, photosensitised reaction. Qualitative description of fluorescence, phosphorescence, non-radiative processes (internal conversion, intersystem crossing).
UNIT-IV
physisorption and Chemisorption: Factors affecting adsorption. Freundlich and Langmuir option isothermcolloidal State: Definition, Classification of colloids, preparation of colloids, properties—kinetic, Optical and Electrical properties of colloids, coagulation and protective action, Hardy-schulz rule, gold number
