first lets see what is bonding and amti-bonding MO
Bonding MO: a bonding molecular orbital is formed by the combination of electron-wave of same sign, i.e. by addition-overlap of atomic orbital. It posses lower energy then the atomic orbitals from which it is formed. The electron density in between the nuclei is high and hence the attraction between the nuclei is high, this explain the formation of a bond between the atoms.
Anti-bonding MO: An anti-bonding molecular orbitals is formed by the combination of electron wave of opposite sign, i.e. by the subtraction overlap of atomic orbitals. it posses the higher energy then from the atomic orbitals from which it is formed. the electron density in between is low and hence the repulsion between the nuclei is high. This explain the non-formation of the bond between the atoms.
